Matthew 16:21-26

21From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” 23But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” Discipleship Is Costly 24Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25”For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26”For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

Simon Peter was at a point in his life that he was learning more about life than he ever had before. Jesus taught him things he probably never thought of. Jesus showed him things he had never seen. Important things, in tangible things, you know, the things that really count. Peter was at the highlight of his life. Peter looked at his future as though the rest of his days would be learning and listening along side of Jesus. But Jesus told Peter of different plans. He spoke of his suffering and death on the cross. Now in Peter’s mind there was no suffering and dying of the one who was now making his life so meaningful. Peter wanted things to go on as they were, things were going great, God’s work was being done Peter said “Heaven forbid Lord, this will never happen to you.” Jesus said God’s view is different, and that Peter had to put aside his view of the future and take hold of Gods view of the future. “Take up your cross and follow me” Give me your life and you will find true life” Peter’s life went on, Jesus went to the cross, Jesus rose on the 3rd day. Peter went through some difficult times. I bet he thought the good old days were gone. But after he was filled with the Holy Spirit the best time of Peters life were just ahead of him. The future as we see it is not always as God sees it. I may feel the best times of my life are here now or maybe they have already gone by. But maybe the best times are still ahead. Keep my focus on God, allow Him to lead me in His future, the one I don’t see but He does!
